Reflections on water

Thinking about lifeforce, water, and fluidity through paint.

The works in this collection showcase my longstanding exploration of water. I have been revisiting this body of work recently as a framework for processing so much about the world today, from the devastating flooding in Kentucky this year to ideas of fluidity as they relate to identity.

I've always loved water as a place to alter your perception of the world - ears under, eyes closed and weightless. Willingly crossing that threshold is always gentle and even spiritual. Over the years, I’ve pushed on scale and materials, I realised that the act of painting itself also evoked an affective transformation in me. The entire painting process - the paint, the broom-sized brushes I sometimes use, and the pigments physically move me from one state of being to another to another; they change my perception just as sinking into water has always done for me.

As I revisit this work, they’ve offered a very timely opportunity to meditate on the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, identity, and our often fraught but utterly essential interconnectedness. This body of work is available for exhibition and ready to hang. If you know of an audience who could benefit from experiencing these works in person, please reach out. I’d love to collaborate on an exhibition.
