Visiting Vesalius

I recently had the extraordinary opportunity to view and sketch directly from the 1543 original publication of Andreas Vesalius' De Humani Corporis Fabrica. Seeing the anatomical engravings firsthand—was nothing short of transformative. It's already beginning to inform my current work. Not only am I fascinated by the graphic representation of human form, but also by the clarifications and misconceptions about the human body in the work.

For instance, this diagram of how Vesalius conceived of the female anatomy became an important element in my sketches for the current series of paintings I'm developing. Below is a detail of my first completed painting as prelude to that series.

Thank you to everyone at New York Academy of Medicine for making this visit possible!
